Secure Your Computer from Children.

No computer should be allowed to operate without Anti-Malware protection installed and auto-updating. We despise the paid subscriptions such as Mcaffe and Norton, as our honey pot tests have shown that they provided no added protection to free solutions.

Computers are becoming more and more a way of life. Our parents half the time are stumped on how to use them, and our children think they know how to use them.

Computer games can be educational, and can help our children learn how to operate a computer which will help them later on in life.

While we don't recommend allowing children 24 hour access to a computer, we want to help relieve some of the pressures involved when children go online.

Securing your computer -- Step One

No computer should be allowed to operate without Anti-Malware protection installed and auto-updating. We despise the paid subscriptions such as Mcaffe and Norton, as our honey pot tests have shown that they provided no added protection to free solutions.

This doesn't mean run out and install the first free anti-malware product you see. Some scammers, in all thier wisdom, got upset that the anti-virus were detecting thier programs and costing them money. So they wrote thier own, and loaded it to the top with viri, spyware, trojans, and more. Others provide less than adequte protection.

If you have a clean system, we recommend using Mircosoft Security Essentials.

Lock down permissions

So, you don't want your child changing your personal settings? Don't want your child to be able to change important system settings? Then don't let them.

You are the administrator of your computer. You have the power of letting your computer control what people are allowed to do, and what they are not. It is alot simpler than it sounds too! To prove that point, I will show you how, complete with pictures.

In order to do this, we need to create a limited account for the kids to login, and password protect the administrator account. This will force the kids to use the limited access account, and leave the admin account alone. Just find your Operating System Below for Detailed Instructions

  1. Windows XP is nearing the end of it's life. Microsoft made an article up detailing the steps you need to take.
    Windows XP

  2. Windows Vista and 7 - Mircosoft's walk through was not as detailed for Vista as it was for XP. We found this guide located here to add a new standard account, and set the password on your adminstrator account

Blocking Content

We want protect our children from certain content. Instead of using expensive software packages, we recommend a free solution, Open DNS

Open Dns allows you to control the content allowed to be accessed from your computer, and has a simple to use web interface.
